The enemy’s power, put in proportion. God’s divine power has already given us everything that pertains to life and godliness — past tense, already done — so a Christian isn’t fighting for victory but from it. The devil is described here as a criminal: what he does is illegal, and knowing that is most of the battle, because he mainly gets at people who don’t know what belongs to them. The second half is about gratitude, and it doesn’t soften it. Israel complained in the wilderness after being freed from slavery and fed from heaven, and it went badly for them. Complaining isn’t a small fault; there’s no fruit of the Spirit called complaining. When self-pity starts, preach to yourself instead.
